Johnson Pump to launch TopWing
Next generation of
rotary lobe pumps
Johnson Pump, the Sweden-based pump manufacturer, has developed a new series of rotary lobe pumps called "TopWing." The next-generation pumps, which grew out of a need to meet increasingly strict hygiene and quality demands, rolls out of production at their Brussels plant since June 1999.
The pumps handle capacities of up to 156 m³/h and are made available in four families over a period of six months. "This is good news for food and pharmaceutical producers," says Mikael Malm, International Marketing Director at Johnson Pump. He adds that chemical producers, pulp & paper manufacturers and others are likely to use the robust new workhorse. The announcement follows the company’s launch, a year earlier, of its TopLobe rotary lobe series. TopWing goes a step further in the company’s efforts to improve hygiene and quality. It completes our range of next-generation rotary lobe pumps."
Many small improvements
To create the new pump, the design team "did a re-think" on every imaginable aspect of rotary lobe design. The result? According to Project Manager Jan Wikborg: "We improved many small things, all of which added up to a major improvement." For instance, a self-draining function has been added to simplify cleaning and prevent germs. And more wet parts are covered in high-quality stainless steel. Furthermore, the rotor blades are now of a bi-wing type, offering a lower shearing action than with tri-lobe models. There are also fewer wear parts, a fact that increases the product lifetime and simplifies maintenance.
Ten minutes, not sixty
Maintenance crews will also breathe a sigh of relief with the arrival of TopWing. Explains Wikborg: "TopWing is so easy to maintain that your own crew can handle it, meaning that you avoid calling in outside service technicians." For example, with easier access to the seal area, it’s now possible to change seals in ten minutes, not one hour. Reason: you don’t need to remove the rotor case to replace or examine the seals. This is an added plus for regular, scheduled maintenance, since it’s now much easier and quicker to check the pumps.
As Wikborg puts it, "If you’ve got a lot of rotary lobe pumps and it takes an hour to check each one, this is a big job. Not any more."
Setting the pace
The introduction of TopWing reflects Johnson Pump’s ongoing commitment to innovate cost-effective solutions in fluid technology. In particular, rotary lobe pumps is an area where the company will continue to make substantial investments. More than just allocating funds to research and development, the company is intent on supporting customers in every way possible – from helping them identify the best possible process solution, to following up with on-time service and maintenance.
Headquartered in Örebro, Sweden, Johnson Pump is a progressive force in fluid technology. Five own manufacturing facilities stretching from India to the U.S. and 14 wholly owned marketing and sales companies across Europe and Australia (1), with additional representation in over 40 countries.
