New Lewa pump
For stringent
hygienic requirements
LEWA has extended the range of its Ecodos series to fulfil the stringent hygienic needs of the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, cosmetic and personal care industries. The new pump provides fluid metering and transfer from 0,4 l/h to 1.500 l/h at pressures up to 20 bar.
The German company LEWA is without any doubt one of the most wellknown manufacturers in the world of zero leakage metering pumps. Its Ecodos pumps range are diaphragm metering pumps for flow rates of 0,4 l/h to 9000 l/h ep to 20 bar maximum. After a first announcement late last year, concerning a new pump in the 500 l/h and 7,5 bar performance range, the company now introduces a pump for the stringent demands of the food and pharmaceutical industries. The new ‘Ecodos hygienic’ pumps indeed fulfil all sanitary and aseptic requirements without compromising the dependable performance and economy of the Ecodos series. The new pumps series has a well defined target group, mainly comprising the following fields of application:
r accurate and precise delivery of buffers or solvents in liquid chromatography
r continuous proportional blending of sensitive or expensive fluids in independently adjustable streams
r sanitary or aseptic fluid transfer
r dosing of fluid ingredients such as enzymes, vitamins, colours, flavours, and nutrients into a main fluid stream
r metering additives in fluidized bed agglomeration
r delivery of fluids to spray mechanisms for coating, such as vitamins and tablet coatings
r filtration and ultrafiltration
Hygienic Design
The hermetically tight design ensures a contamination-free, sterile environment for fluid pumping or metering, even during extended process operations. The pumphead features low hold-up volume, which minimizes waste of expensive fluids. The pumping chamber is streamlined with an open fluid path to allow optimal flushing, with all the fluid "active". Moreover, all pumphead components are constructed of 1.4435 (316 L) stainless steel, with all internal wetted surfaces mechanically polished and electropolished according to industry standards (<0,5 µm). This provides ease of residue removal and protection from corrosion. ln addition, the choice of PTFE and elastomer materials and the special interior design aspects of Ecodos hygienic pumps ensures CIP/SIP capability. Product changeover is easily achieved by flushing, followed by drying with sterile air.
Patented 4-layer diaphragm
The patented 4-layer diaphragm is one of the typical features of all Ecodos pumps. The pure PTFE diaphragm rolls instead of flexes, and is proven to last for years in continuous service. If diaphragm damage occurs, the condition monitor instantly detects the perforation for alarm or shutdown purposes. The design is failsafe: no leakage or process contamination can occur, and there is no hydraulic fluid to enter the piping system. Standard aseptic connections allow for quick disassembly for inspection purposes, as well as easy integration of the pump into typical pipeline configurations. The valve seals located within the triclamp connection feature a precisely controlled compression which results in a crevice-free seal area. The seals are fully contained and cannot wander into the product zone. All valve components are streamlined and without crevices. The drive mechanisms of the Ecodos series have proven themselves trouble-free over years of continuous service. The pump external design, corrosion-proof materials of construction and exterior coating are chosen to allow for ease of external cleaning. The pumps are fully washdown proof. Several options for motors are available. Often biopharmaceutical manufacturing requires additional comprehensive documentation. Therefor the company provides traceability of materials, additional drawings, hydrostatic testing, multipoint performance tests, surface finish measurements, material certificates, and more. The pumps are manufactured to an ISO 9001 Total Quality Management System.
